Carnival in Rio de Janeiro: more than Samba Parade

Besides the Samba School Parade, Rio de Janeiro offers much more : in example the balls. Carnival balls are surreal and erotic events starting late with the continual samba beat supplied by live bands driving the festivities into the next day. Fancy dress is the order of the day, elaborate costumes brightening the already hectic proceedings, but don't worry if you haven't got one, the trend tends to be to wear little to these balls! The big
Balls are the Red and Black Ball on Friday at the Scala -Leblon-and the Gay Ball on Tuesday. The Ball at the Copacabana Palace Hotel is a high-class option (up to $500 a ticket!). If you want a wild party, Scala in Leblon is a good choice on Av. Afranio de Melo
Franco, or Canecao on Av. Venceslau in Botafogo.
In Copacabana there are many big Balls at Help a nightclub right on Av. Atlantica. Also around Copacabana Beach, there are several balls that cater for hot singles. These take place on every night and themes vary. Tickets usually cost about US$20 and can be bought on the door. There are plenty of other balls downtown and around the Sambadrome on the Avenida Marques de Sapucai.
